Sunday, 29th November Crystal36-AXAA Conference 2026

9:00AM - 4:30PM
Sunday, 29th November
Upper Level South Room
Chair: Tony Wang

Sponsored by the Australian X-ray Analytical Association
Join us in person for the AXAA XRD/XRF Workshop, covering the theories and applications of these two popular characterisation techniques. Research student delegates are recommended to join and prepare themselves with basic XRD and XRF knowledge before the main conference though this AXAA workshop. Join us in person to explore these commonly used characterisation techniques, ask questions, and connect to experts in the field. It’s a great chance to boost your skills and meet fellow science enthusiasts. Don’t miss out on this AXAA subsidized learning opportunity!

Key Topics of XRD Workshop (Morning):

  • Demonstration of Rietveld refinements
  • Equations for diffraction peak positions, peak intensities, and peak widths
  • Choices of XRD geometries and common XRD applications
  • Geometric aberrations in Bragg-Brentano geometry
  • Penetration Depth and Average Information depth

Key Topics of XRF Workshop (Afternoon):

  • Fundamental theory: X-rays interaction with matter
  • The XRF Signal: Background, line overlap, matrix effects and analysis depth
  • Standardless analysis: matrix correction via Fundamental Parameters
  • Standard Calibration: matrix correction via Alphas (theoretical or empirical)
  • Good laboratory Practice: Sample preparation and QA/QC for XRF

12:30PM - 4:30PM
Sunday, 29th November
Lakeside Room

This workshop will cover both datamining using the ICDD PDF-5+ database and methods of analysis embodied in ICDD PDF-5+ Sieve+ and ICDD MDI JADE Pro software. Hands-on access to PDF-5+ and JADE Pro will be available through a remote desktop server via web access. Attendees should bring their laptop computer with wireless web access capability (Edge, Chrome, Firefox). The access to PDF-5+ and JADE Pro will be available during the Crystal36-AXAA2026 conference and for the month of December after the conference.

Key Topics

  •        Materials characterization using powder diffraction
  •        Powder Diffraction File database entries
  •        Datamining
  •        Qualitative and quantitative phase analysis
  •        Specialized tools
