Matthew Thomas

I’m a PhD candidate in Materials Science and Engineering at Monash University, researching hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ores as a pathway toward lower-emission ironmaking. My work looks at how sintered phase assemblages form in synthetic iron ore materials under different conditions and how those phases affect reduction behaviour, microstructure, and by-product formation. I have a background in chemical engineering and several years of hands-on CNC machining and fabrication experience, which has been genuinely useful when designing and building my own experimental setups. I’m currently exploring high energy in-situ XRD analysis to plot reaction pathways and kinetics in this complex system.
